Labour’s Disability Cuts Will Push Scots into Poverty: “A Disgusting New Low”

The Labour government’s own analysis shows that its cuts will push 250,000 people across the UK into poverty, including vulnerable people in Scotland.

Maggie Chapman MSP, the Scottish Greens social justice spokesperson has branded the cuts “a disgusting new low.”

Since taking power, Labour has cut winter fuel payments, cut public services, denied WASPI women compensation, cut international aid, and now they are brutally cutting social security for the most vulnerable in our society.

Scottish Greens social justice spokesperson Maggie Chapman MSP said:

“There is one word to describe what these brutal Labour cuts are, and that is austerity.

“There can be no denying it.

“Poverty is a political choice.

“When presented with the choice of taxing the rich or pushing hundreds of thousands of people further into poverty, Rachel Reeves and Keir Starmer chose to punish some of the most marginalised communities in our country.

“UK Labour’s own government impact report shows the true cost of these despicable cuts.

“250,000 people will be forced into poverty, 50,000 of whom are children.

“It is a disgusting new low, and the human cost will be terrible.

“We know clearly what side the Labour Party takes.

“And it’s not the side of struggling households and families.

“It is the side of the rich, the arms dealers and the corporations who are raking in record profits.

“Scotland deserves so much better than this.

“We can build a fairer social security system that puts people first, but it’s clear that can only happen with the powers of independence.

“We need a stronger, larger pro-independence majority in Holyrood in 2026 to ensure the voice of Scotland is heard.”
