Leah McBain from Lochinver has been appointed Highland Youth Convener for 2025/26.

She stepped into the role at the end of August, following a handover with outgoing convener Lauren McKittrick from Inverness.

At 23, Leah becomes the 17th young person to hold the year-long post, which provides a direct link between young people and senior decision-makers at Highland Council.

The full-time bursary role involves attending council and community planning meetings, supporting area youth forums and school pupil councils, and leading work with the Highland Youth Parliament.

Previously an assistant youth worker with Highland Council’s Youth Service, Leah is passionate about ensuring young people feel confident, supported and heard, particularly in rural communities.

“Being offered this role is a privilege,” she said.

“I’m honoured to provide a voice for one of the most under-represented groups in Scotland.

Young people are the future, and we must do more to support and uplift them.”

Leah holds a degree in History and Criminology from the University of the Highlands and Islands.

She chose to study locally and remains committed to the region, both professionally and personally.

As someone with additional support needs, she credits Ullapool Youth Development Officer Yvonne Boa as a key figure in her journey.

“Like so many villages around Ullapool, Lochinver has far fewer resources, especially for young people,” she said.

“Given my own rurality, I hope young people living in places where getting to school takes an hour or more will feel represented.”

Outside her core role, Leah is currently studying British Sign Language and disability awareness online to better support young people with additional needs.

She also sits on the board of her local historical society, where she encourages young people to connect with Highland heritage and the natural landscape.

Highland Council leaders welcomed Leah’s appointment warmly.

Cllr John Finlayson, Chair of the Education Committee, said:

“She will be an asset to our committees, and we look forward to working with her during her term.”

Council Convener Bill Lobban said:

“The Highland Youth Convener plays a vital part in helping us understand and engage with the issues that matter to young people.”

Leader of the Council Raymond Bremner added:

“Young people will shape the future of the Highlands.

“We must listen to their voices and include them in decision-making.”
