Local MSP Requests Reassurances on Access to Abortion Healthcare in Region

Emma Roddick MSP has pressed the Scottish Government to ensure that abortion healthcare is accessible to constituents in the Highlands and Islands, in light of reports that patients attending clinics across the Central Belt have experienced intimidation and harassment by protestors outside.

Having already committed to supporting a forthcoming Members’ Bill from Green MSP Gillian Mackay, the Highlands and Islands representative has asked the Scottish Government to monitor activity elsewhere in the country and inform the Parliament of any incidents.

She said:

“Abortion is healthcare and we must ensure that people are able to access it safely when they need to.

“It is unacceptable that so-called protesters are intimidating vulnerable patients at what is often a very difficult time.

“Whatever your personal views, there’s no justification for making patients at a hospital or clinic feel attacked and upset on their way to an appointment.

“This is particularly important to consider when you think about how many clinics which provide abortion services also see patients for other sexual health matters, including care immediately after rape.

“As always, I ask protestors to protest at the Scottish Parliament, where decisions are made.

“Tell lawmakers what your views are; do not harass individuals as they exercise their legal right to bodily autonomy.”
