Ariane Burgess, Scottish Green MSP for the Highlands & Islands region, has today responded to Ofgem’s latest update on the phased switch-off of the Radio Teleswitch Service (RTS), which is set to begin on 30 June 2025.
Ariane has been vocal about her concerns regarding the RTS proposals and the unacceptably slow progress, especially in the Highlands & Islands.
“I am pleased to see that Ofgem and the government are finally acknowledging the significant issues surrounding the RTS phase-out,” said Ariane.
“For too long, the pace of change has been inadequate, and it is reassuring to see a more cautious and targeted approach being adopted.”
Burgess has already raised further questions with Ofgem, seeking clarity on how long the phased approach will last and whether there will be thorough monitoring of installations on the ground before any transmitters are switched off.
“This phased approach must be meticulously managed to ensure that no household is left without essential heating or hot water,” she added.
“I have asked Ofgem to provide detailed information on how the phasing will be implemented and monitored to protect consumers.”
Ariane also highlighted how this situation underscores the broader mismanagement of the UK’s grid and energy systems by the UK Government.
She reiterated the need for full devolution of the energy system to better suit Scotland’s unique landscape, maximize its renewable energy potential, and enable more direct community ownership of energy and infrastructure.
“The current mismanagement of our energy systems by the UK Government is unacceptable,” she stated.
“Scotland needs full control over its energy future to build a grid that meets our specific needs, harnesses our renewable resources, and empowers our communities.”
