Na h-Eileanan an Iar MP Angus MacNeil has commented on the extraordinary scenes in the House of Commons when a motion on Gaza did not even get to a vote on a ceasefire.

Commenting Mr MacNeil said:

“Constituents and voters will feel cheated by the farce in the House of Commons when the Speaker did something very unprecedented leading to the fact that things descended into chaos and there was no vote.

“I waited for hours to vote on behalf of the many constituents who had been in touch but sadly it was a day of Britannia waves the rules.

“The people who are really short-changed are the people of Gaza.

“This could have been the domino that led to a ceasefire and saving countless lives.

“The last time there was a vote in the House of Commons on a ceasefire there were 12,000 killed in Gaza, mostly women and children now 30,000 have been killed in Gaza, again mostly women and children.

“The people of Gaza deserve better from a parliament that is a permanent member of the UN Security Council.

“Many are suspecting that the Speaker of the House acted erratically to save Labour having to vote on a ceasefire.

“We all know that Labour have been silent on trying to save lives of civilians in Gaza and have been avoiding saying what needs to happen and that is an immediate ceasefire and a stop to the killings.”
