A long-awaited return is on the horizon for the Maid of Glencoul, as Highland Council confirms the vessel’s refit is almost complete.

The ferry, which has been undergoing an extensive dry dock overhaul, is now entering its final phase, with just one final warranty repair standing between it and sea trials with the Maritime and Coastguard Agency.

Once those trials are complete and its licence renewed, the Maid will return to Ardgour to resume its vital role as a relief vessel for the MV Corran.

The Council says the vessel is expected back in early September, with full public updates to follow as soon as she is safely back in service.

Her return will offer long-needed resilience for the Corran Ferry service, which has faced disruption in recent weeks, including a five-day outage of the MV Corran due to Storm Floris and a steering fault.

Economy and Infrastructure Chair, Councillor Ken Gowans, said:

“The Highland Council regrets the reduction to service, the additional journey time and the impact the delay in the Maid of Glencoul’s return has caused the public and businesses during the recent 5-day outage.”

He added that the Council is working to “expedite” the final works on the Maid of Glencoul, saying the importance of a support vessel for the service cannot be overstated.

The refit included vital safety improvements required under updated maritime safety legislation, formally known as The Merchant Shipping (Safety Standards for Passenger Ships on Domestic Voyages) (Miscellaneous Amendments) Regulations 2022.

The changes meant a longer refit, but also ensure the vessel is ready to serve communities for years to come.

Cllr Gowans praised the ferry staff for their commitment, saying:

“The Corran Ferry crew has been exceptional during really challenging circumstances and without waver they continue to work tirelessly to bring the Maid of Glencoul back home.

“I would like to thank them for their long-standing commitment and dedication.”

As one of the UK’s last remaining vehicle turntable ferries, the Maid of Glencoul holds not only operational importance but also a strong place in local heritage.

When she returns, it will be more than just a vessel resuming its duty, it will be a sign of greater stability ahead for residents and businesses who rely on this essential crossing.
