Significant traffic management measures will come into force on the A9 between Jubilee Bridge and Ballinluig from 5 January 2026 ahead of major construction works for the A9 Dualling project between Tay Crossing and Ballinluig.
A temporary 40mph speed restriction will be introduced from that date and will remain in place until the upgraded road becomes operational by the end of 2028.
The restriction will apply in both directions, at all times, throughout the construction period.
Transport Scotland says the measure is essential to protect road users and the workforce as preparations begin for full construction in the spring.
Further temporary changes will be phased in across February and March including narrowed lanes, restrictions on right turns and the installation of a temporary roundabout.
Details of each measure will be communicated in advance.
The project will upgrade approximately 5 miles, or 8.2 kilometres, of single carriageway to dual carriageway.
The design aims to improve safety, strengthen route resilience and create new opportunities for training, education and employment linked to the construction programme.
Pedestrian access will be maintained and bus stops will remain in use in both directions throughout the works.
Road users are being advised to approach the area with care and to allow extra time for their journeys.
Journey times through the affected section are expected to rise by around 1 minute once the temporary management is fully in place.
Ruth Whillis, Project Manager for Transport Scotland, said:
“Its great to see this further progress on Dualling this fourth section of the A9.
“The installation of the 40mph temporary speed restriction through the site area is a tried and tested approach to keeping both road users and those working in close proximity to the A9 trunk road safe.
“Please allow extra time for your journey and as the full traffic management will be installed progressively, traffic layouts may change during the first few months of the year so take care on approach to the area and adhere to all temporary signage in place.”
Existing overnight traffic management will continue for site clearance works and will operate under a reduced temporary speed restriction of 30mph in works areas.
Laybys along the route will be closed to the public during the operation of these measures.
Specific laybys at the northern and southern extents of the site will remain available for vehicles carrying large loads.
Transport Scotland has advised that works are weather dependent and may be subject to alteration if conditions are not favourable.
