An 86 year old man has died following a collision between a car and a van on the A9 near Tain, with police appealing for witnesses and dashcam footage as investigations continue into the circumstances of the crash.
Emergency services were called to the A9 at Tarlogie at approximately 5.15pm on Saturday 10 October 2026, following a collision involving a white Peugeot 208 and a white Renault Master Luton van.
The driver of the Peugeot, an 86 year old man, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police Scotland has confirmed that his family has been informed.
The driver of the van, a 41 year old man, was taken to hospital with injuries described as not life threatening.
The A9 was closed following the collision to allow emergency services to attend and specialist road policing officers to carry out an investigation at the scene.
The road remained closed for several hours before reopening at approximately 3.25am on Sunday 11 October.
Road policing officers are now working to establish the full circumstances surrounding the collision and are asking anyone who may have witnessed what happened to come forward.
They are also particularly interested in hearing from motorists who were travelling through the Tarlogie area around the time of the crash and may have dashcam footage that could assist their enquiries.
Sergeant Chris Donaldson said:
“Our thoughts are with the family of the man who died.
“Enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances and we are asking anyone who saw what happened or who has dash-cam that could assist to get in touch.”
Police have not released further details about the circumstances leading to the collision.
Anyone who was travelling along the A9 near Tain on Saturday evening and may have seen either vehicle before the incident is encouraged to contact officers.
Even footage that does not show the collision itself may assist investigators in establishing the movements of the vehicles beforehand.
The appeal follows another fatal collision on the A9 at Coulnagower, south of Cromarty Bridge, on Friday morning, when a man died following a crash involving four vehicles.
Police are conducting separate investigations into the two incidents.
Anyone with information about the collision at Tarlogie is asked to contact Police Scotland on 101, quoting incident number 2277 of Saturday 10 October 2026.
