A man has been arrested following the sexual assault of an eight-year-old boy at a popular campsite in Drumnadrochit.

Police were called in the early hours of Thursday, 31 July, after the child was reportedly approached inside his tent at the Loch Ness Bay Campsite between 12.20am and 1am.

The 44-year-old man was arrested in connection with the incident, which has shaken the small Highland community and prompted a swift police response.

Detective Superintendent Calum Smith, who is leading the investigation, praised locals for their cooperation.

“We would like to thank the local community for their support during our investigation,” he said.

“In particular, local businesses and those who came forward with information.”

The popular tourist campsite, which sits just a short distance from the shores of Loch Ness, was partially cordoned off on Thursday as officers conducted door-to-door enquiries and examined CCTV footage.

A police presence remained visible throughout the day, with officers reassuring visitors and staff while continuing their investigation behind the scenes.

No further details have been released about the suspect, and officers confirmed that enquiries remain ongoing.

A report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.

The incident has caused deep concern in the community and among holidaymakers, many of whom expressed shock that such a crime could occur in a family-friendly location.

Local councillors have also acknowledged the anxiety felt by residents and visitors alike.

Police are urging anyone who was in the area during the time of the incident and who may have witnessed anything suspicious to come forward.

Anyone with information is encouraged to contact Police Scotland on 101, quoting reference number 0196 of 31 July, or to make an anonymous report through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
