A 32 year old man who died at a house in Strathspey Place in Inverness on Thursday 4 December has been named locally as Iain Gordon Macfarlane from the Ullapool area.
Emergency services were called to the property around 8.30am on Thursday and Iain was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police Scotland confirmed that a 52 year old man has now been arrested and charged in connection with the death and is expected to appear at Inverness Sheriff Court on Monday 8 December.
The news has caused deep sadness among those who knew Iain, who is being remembered as a talented young man with strong ties to the west coast and a wide circle of friends.
Inverness officers remained in the area throughout Thursday and Friday carrying out enquiries and offering reassurance to residents who were shocked by the scale of the emergency response.
Detective Inspector Caroline MacKay said:
“Our thoughts are with the friends and family of the deceased at this time, and we’d like to thank the local community for their assistance and patience as enquiries have been carried out.
“This was a contained incident and there is no further risk to the public.
“Additional patrols remain ongoing in the area to provide reassurance and anyone with concerns should speak to officers.”
People living nearby spoke of a quiet street unsettled by the suddenness of events, with many expressing sympathy for Iain’s family as they try to come to terms with their loss.
Police have confirmed there are no outstanding suspects and that the investigation is progressing in preparation for court proceedings.
For now Strathspey Place returns to its usual calm with officers continuing to offer a presence in the area as part of their reassurance patrols.
Iain’s family have asked for privacy while they deal with the tragedy, and the wider community in Ullapool and Inverness has begun to share tributes remembering a life cut far too short.
In the days ahead the focus will move to the courts, but for many the priority is simply holding space for a young man whose loss is felt deeply by the people who loved him.
