A 22 year old man has been convicted of culpable homicide following the death of Robert Bromell after an incident involving a moving ambulance in Oban.
Lewis Budge pleaded guilty at the High Court in Glasgow on Wednesday 21 January 2026, with sentencing to take place at a later date.
The court heard that the incident happened in the early hours of Wednesday 6 September 2023 on Corran Esplanade, a stretch of the A85 that runs along Oban’s waterfront.
Robert Bromell, who was 39, was pushed into the path of an ambulance and suffered catastrophic injuries.
He was taken to hospital but died the following day, on Thursday 7 September 2023.
What unfolded in seconds has had lasting consequences for Mr Bromell’s family, friends, and the wider community.
The case brought together evidence of a sudden act of violence and the irreversible harm that followed.
After an investigation, Budge was arrested and charged in connection with Mr Bromell’s death.
Speaking after the conviction, Inspector Gerry Shovlin acknowledged the impact the case continues to have on those left behind.
“Our thoughts remain with Robert’s family and friends, who have suffered a devastating loss.
“While no outcome can undo what happened, I hope this guilty plea brings some measure of comfort to them.
“This was a shocking and senseless attack.
“Violence such as this is never acceptable in our communities.”
The court proceedings marked an important moment for accountability, but they do not lessen the scale of the loss experienced by those who knew Mr Bromell.
Sentencing will take place at a later date, when the court will determine the punishment to be imposed.
