A man who launched a brutal assault on an 84-year-old shop worker in Inverness has been jailed for 13 years.
Richard Wilson, 28, admitted attempted murder, assault and robbery at the High Court in Inverness on Tuesday, 5 August 2025.
He was sentenced today at the High Court in Glasgow.
The attack took place on 12 March 2024 at a local shop on Torvean Avenue, where the elderly victim was working.
Wilson’s violent actions left the man with serious injuries, sparking a major investigation by Police Scotland.
Detective Inspector Caroline Mackay described the incident as “an extremely vicious and despicable display of violence”.
“The man suffered serious injuries and the long-term recovery time, as well as the emotional trauma caused by this attack, cannot be underestimated,” she said.
The victim, who was alone in the premises at the time, was left seriously hurt following the assault.
His recovery has involved ongoing medical treatment and emotional support.
The court heard how a local woman came to the man’s aid shortly after the incident, and police praised the community for their assistance during the investigation.
“We would like to thank the local community for their support during our investigation, in particular a woman who came to the aid of the elderly shop worker,” said DI Mackay.
The 13-year sentence reflects the severity of Wilson’s actions and the impact on the victim and wider community.
“I hope this sentence sends a clear message that violence is completely unacceptable,” DI Mackay added.
“Police Scotland are committed to bringing perpetrators to justice and we will continue to work closely with our partners to do so.”
The case has prompted renewed calls for vigilance and community care, especially for vulnerable individuals in customer-facing roles.
