A newly refurbished artificial pitch at Milne’s High School in Fochabers is now open for bookings, following a £165,000 investment to upgrade the facility for pupils and the wider community.
The project has delivered a new playing surface alongside energy efficient LED floodlights, allowing the pitch to be used throughout the year by both school groups and local sports clubs.
In a first for Moray, the surface uses natural cork granules between the artificial grass fibres, offering improved cushioning for players while replacing traditional plastic infill with a more environmentally friendly alternative.
The upgrade forms part of Moray Council’s wider commitment to climate adaptation, while also aiming to increase participation in sport and physical activity across the community.
Council officials expect the improved facility to attract greater use from local groups, while also generating additional income through pitch bookings.
Denise Whitworth, Executive Director for Education, Housing and Communities, said:
“It’s great to see this project completed and the Milne’s pitch back in use by pupils and community groups.
“The installation of a cork based playing surface is a positive step in supporting our commitment to sustainability, while providing a high quality facility for sport and physical activity.
“We hope the upgraded pitch will be well used by the local community for many years to come.”
The reopening marks a boost for grassroots sport in Fochabers, with a modern facility designed to support both performance and participation.
Milne’s High School’s upgraded pitch is now open for bookings, offering a year round sports facility that combines improved playability with a more sustainable approach to design.
