Moray Council libraries have unveiled two new digital research services, giving members free access to powerful tools for exploring history and tracing family roots.

The British Newspaper Archive and Ancestry Library Edition are now available at all libraries across Moray, bringing a world of historical information within reach of every library cardholder.

The British Newspaper Archive allows users to search millions of pages of newsprint from across the UK and beyond, offering a fascinating glimpse into the headlines, stories, and everyday lives of the past.

From local events to national moments that shaped history, the collection offers a treasure trove for researchers, writers, and anyone with a curiosity about where they come from.

The addition of Ancestry Library Edition gives members access to an extensive collection of genealogical records, including birth, death, marriage, and military documents.

Users can also browse historic UK Census, Parish, and Immigration records, a valuable starting point for anyone keen to build or expand their family tree.

All library PCs are free to use, though advance booking is recommended to guarantee a slot.

Members can also access the new digital resources via public Wi-Fi on their own devices when visiting their local branch.

Chair of Moray Council’s Education, Children’s and Leisure Services Committee, Councillor Kathleen Robertson, said the launch marks another step forward in making learning and discovery accessible to everyone.

“We’re delighted to offer these new digital resources to our community,” she said.

“Whether you’re researching your family tree or exploring historical events, these tools provide a wealth of information right at your fingertips.”

The new services form part of Moray Council’s ongoing commitment to supporting digital literacy and lifelong learning through its library network.

By expanding free access to historical archives and genealogical records, the council hopes to make research more accessible for local residents, schools, and community groups.

Anyone interested in using the British Newspaper Archive or Ancestry Library Edition can visit their local library, book a computer online, or find out more via Moray Council’s library pages.
