Nearly Three Quarters of Scots Back Return to EU as Support Grows

Almost three quarters of people in Scotland now support rejoining the European Union, according to a new opinion poll published today.

The poll, carried out by Survation for True North Advisors and published in the Sunday Herald, shows 73 per cent of Scots back a return to EU membership.

The figure represents a rise of more than 10 percentage points on the 62 per cent Remain vote recorded in Scotland at the 2016 Brexit referendum.

The findings come a decade after Scotland was taken out of the EU despite voting overwhelmingly to remain.

SNP depute leader Keith Brown said the poll underlines growing frustration with the impact of Brexit and the lack of ambition from UK wide parties.

He said Brexit has contributed to economic decline and rising living costs, driven in part by increased barriers to trade.

Brown argued that the political landscape at Westminster now offers no realistic route back into the EU for Scotland within the UK.

“After a decade of decline under Brexit, it is no surprise that 73 per cent of Scots now want to rejoin the EU.

“Scotland overwhelmingly voted to stay in the EU in 2016 and we should never have been removed in the first place.”

“Brexit has been a disaster for the economy and has seen the cost of living skyrocket due to increased import and export costs.

Brown said UK wide parties have abandoned any ambition to rejoin the EU.

“All the Westminster parties have given up on the EU.

“With the architect of Brexit, Nigel Farage, now a dominant force in UK politics, a UK wide return to the EU is totally off the cards.

“The only way for Scotland to return to the EU is with independence.

“And the only way to deliver that fresh start is with an SNP majority at the elections in May.”

The poll adds to growing debate over Scotland’s future relationship with Europe as economic pressures and political divisions continue to shape public opinion.
