A new national programme has been launched to help Scottish businesses unlock the economic potential of artificial intelligence.

Backed by nearly £1 million in government funding, the initiative will offer practical support to help firms adopt and expand the use of AI across their operations.

The scheme is aimed at small and medium-sized businesses and will provide a mix of expert advice, tailored consultancy, and targeted grants.

The goal is to help companies develop smarter products and services, increase competitiveness, and open up new markets.

Delivered in partnership with Scottish Enterprise, Highlands and Islands Enterprise, South of Scotland Enterprise, The Data Lab and the Scottish AI Alliance, it marks the first step in a new national drive called AI Scotland.

The programme was launched during National Innovation Week, with Business Minister Richard Lochhead visiting Edinburgh Trams to see AI technology already in action.

The city’s tram operator has been working with local consultants Integrated Human Factors to develop a wearable device that monitors driver fatigue in real time.

“Artificial intelligence is a hugely powerful, rapidly evolving tool that can support and drive our economy,” said Mr Lochhead.

“It can help businesses work smarter, innovate faster, and support their workforce.”

“This new programme will give SMEs across Scotland the practical support they need to explore how AI could boost their growth and resilience,” he added.

“I’d urge businesses to take that first step.”

Companies will be able to access the support through the Find Business Support website.

The programme is open to businesses from every part of Scotland, from start-ups to established firms exploring digital transformation.

Rhona Allison, Managing Director of Productivity & Business Growth at Scottish Enterprise, said the demand for support is clear and growing.

“AI has the potential to drive major efficiency gains and increase competitiveness,” she said.

“But research shows that three quarters of Scotland’s SMEs aren’t using any AI at all, and don’t plan to start soon.”

“This programme is about changing that, about showing the real-world benefits of AI, helping businesses overcome uncertainty, and making sure the right support is there when they need it.”

The programme is part of the Scottish Government’s broader plans to position AI as a positive force for innovation, inclusion and growth.

Independent research suggests AI adoption could add up to £19 billion to Scotland’s economy by 2035.
