Plans to replace the Black Bridge near Beauly have been redesigned following concerns from local people, with the existing crossing now expected to remain open for the vast majority of the construction period.
SSEN Transmission has unveiled a new proposal to build the replacement bridge around ten metres downstream from the current structure, avoiding the lengthy closure and diversions which had worried residents under the earlier plans.
The revised design was presented at public consultation events in Beauly and Kiltarlity on 17 September and follows an earlier round of consultation held towards the end of 2025.
Residents had raised concerns about road closures, lengthy alternative routes and the effect construction could have on everyday journeys, with maintaining access across the River Beauly emerging as one of the strongest priorities.
Further engineering work has now allowed SSEN Transmission to propose constructing the new crossing alongside the existing bridge rather than closing the current structure while its replacement is built.
The replacement is being developed as a standalone project and would be capable of carrying the types of vehicles required for major infrastructure developments in the area.
SSEN Transmission says the bridge would also support wider investment in the electricity transmission network across the north of Scotland.
Feedback at the latest consultation events was described by the company as broadly positive, particularly towards the prospect of significantly reducing disruption during construction.
Laurie Kibblewhite, Project Director at SSEN Transmission, said:
“We would like to thank everyone who has taken the time to engage with us on our plans so far.
“The changes we are now proposing are a direct result of what we heard from local people during our first round of consultation.
“Residents told us clearly that maintaining access across the River Beauly and minimising disruption during construction were among their biggest priorities.
“We’ve listened carefully to that feedback and worked hard to develop a solution that eases those concerns while still delivering the proposed infrastructure improvements that are needed.
“We were pleased with the positive and constructive discussions at our recent consultation events, and we’re encouraging anyone with an interest in the project to continue sharing their views.
“Community feedback remains a vital part of the planning process and will help shape the final proposals that we submit.”
The consultation period remains open until 22 October 2026.

For communities around Beauly and Kiltarlity, the biggest change is a straightforward one, with a bridge replacement that once threatened significant disruption now being designed around keeping the existing route available for as long as possible.
