New and replacement bus and cycle shelters are being installed across Orkney as work gets underway following successful external funding from the Scottish Government.
The improvements are being delivered through support from the Scottish Government Bus Infrastructure Fund and the People and Place Programme.
In total, the funding will see five new cycle shelters and nine bus shelters installed across the county.
The package also includes upgrades to bus timetable displays throughout Orkney and new real time information systems at Kirkwall Travel Centre.
Following a competitive tender process, Trueform has been awarded the contract to supply the shelters and display units.
Groundworks are being carried out by Orkney Builders (Contractors) Ltd.
Chair of the Development and Infrastructure Committee, Kristopher Leask, said the upgrades respond directly to long standing community requests.
“We’re pleased to be able to deliver these improvements that communities have been asking for.
“Installing new and replacement shelters and timetable displays will help support the use of public transport and encourage active travel across the county.”
New bus shelters are being installed in Deerness, Rendall, Birsay, Stromness, St Margaret’s Hope, and Hoy.
Replacement bus shelters are planned for Kirkwall Airport, Stenness, and Harray.
New cycle shelters will be installed in Sanday, Hoy, Westray, and Eday, strengthening active travel infrastructure across Orkney’s islands.
The work forms part of wider efforts to improve transport accessibility, reliability, and sustainability for residents and visitors alike.
Council officials say the upgrades will make public transport more attractive and easier to use, particularly in rural and island communities.
