New Coastguard Helicopter Base Opens in Oban to Strengthen Summer Rescue Cover

A new HM Coastguard search and rescue helicopter base has opened in Oban, boosting emergency response capability across the west coast during the busy summer months.

The seasonal base in Argyll and Bute forms part of the UK’s next generation search and rescue aviation programme, designed to modernise and strengthen coverage in key locations.

It will operate from April through to September, with an AgustaWestland AW189 rescue helicopter on standby with a 15 minute readiness between 9am and 9pm.

The facility includes a purpose built hangar, operational planning room, offices and rest areas, giving crews the infrastructure needed to respond quickly and effectively in one of Scotland’s most challenging environments.

Oban has long been a strategic location for maritime and mountain rescue operations, with increased summer tourism placing additional demand on emergency services across the west coast and islands.

The new base is intended to ease that pressure, providing faster response times and improved coverage in an area known for its remote terrain and unpredictable conditions.

At the same time, HM Coastguard has introduced a new helicopter at its Caernarfon base in Wales, replacing the existing aircraft with a modern AgustaWestland AW139 operating around the clock.

Both developments form part of the wider UKSAR2G programme, which is reshaping how aerial search and rescue services are delivered across the country.

The programme is being delivered by Bristow Helicopters under a 10 year contract, with a focus on improving capability while offering better value for the public purse.

Chief Coastguard Paddy O’Callaghan said:

“We’re pleased to take into service a new seasonal base at Oban and a state-of-the-art new aircraft further down the coast at Caernarfon.

“Both form part of the UKSAR2G programme, demonstrating HM Coastguard’s commitment to innovation and ongoing enhancement.

“These developments will help ensure we continue to deliver a high quality search and rescue service for people across the UK, particularly in areas that see increased demand during the summer months.”

The move reflects a broader shift towards more flexible and responsive coverage, with seasonal bases allowing resources to be deployed where they are needed most at different times of the year.

For communities and visitors across the Highlands and islands, the presence of a dedicated rescue helicopter in Oban offers reassurance during a time when the region sees some of its highest levels of activity.

As tourism grows and outdoor activity continues to rise, the demand for fast, reliable rescue services remains as critical as ever.

A new HM Coastguard helicopter base in Oban strengthens summer rescue cover across the west coast, improving response times and supporting growing demand as tourism and outdoor activity increase in the Highlands and islands.
