A new training programme offering a pathway into the subsea industry will begin this September at UHI North, West and Hebrides in Fort William.
The 10-day course, called Pathway to ROV-101 Essentials, is aimed at those seeking a career working with remotely operated vehicles and will provide both technical knowledge and practical experience.
Developed in partnership with DRIFT Offshore, a specialist in subsea resourcing and training, the course is designed to meet the growing demand for skilled workers in the offshore energy and marine sectors.
Training will be delivered at the college’s Fort William campus on the shores of Loch Linnhe and will focus on three core areas: electrical systems, hydraulic systems and networking or data communications.
By the end of the programme, participants will have gained the skills required to support, maintain and troubleshoot the key systems that power and control subsea ROVs in line with International Marine Contractors Association (IMCA) standards.
David Campbell, Director of Business Enterprise and Development at UHI North, West and Hebrides, said the course had been developed to respond directly to industry needs.
“We’re delighted to confirm the start date of our first ROV training course, which has been designed in partnership with industry experts to deliver high-quality subsea training that directly responds to sector needs,” he said.
“By combining DRIFT Offshore’s expertise in delivering industry-recognised training with UHI North, West and Hebrides’ shoreside facilities and academic excellence, we’ve created a powerful collaboration that supports the skills pipeline for the subsea industry.”
He added that aligning the course with both IMCA and Scottish Qualifications Authority standards would provide reassurance to employers and confidence to trainees.
The subsea sector continues to grow as offshore energy, renewable and marine projects expand across Scotland and internationally, offering a wealth of opportunities for skilled technicians.
