New Wildfire Action Plan Aims To Strengthen Protection Across The Highlands

A new Scottish Government strategic action plan aimed at improving wildfire prevention and response across Scotland has been welcomed by Highlands and Islands MSP Emma Roddick.

The plan was confirmed on Thursday 5 March 2026 after Agriculture and Connectivity Minister Jim Fairlie responded to a parliamentary question from Ms Roddick outlining the government’s approach to tackling wildfire risks.

The strategy draws on lessons from the 2025 wildfire season and has been developed following consultation with a range of agencies and land management organisations.

Wildfires have become an increasing concern in parts of the Highlands and Islands where large areas of peatland, moorland and heath can be vulnerable during prolonged dry conditions.

Land managers and emergency services have previously warned that climate patterns and land use pressures are increasing the risk of significant fires across rural landscapes.

The Scottish Government says the new strategy is designed to strengthen national preparedness while improving how agencies respond when wildfires occur.

Measures outlined in the plan aim to support practical improvements to prevention, coordination and emergency response.

Emma Roddick said the publication of the strategy represents an important step after the challenges seen during the previous wildfire season.

“I am very pleased to see the publication of this strategic action plan today.

“After the challenging wildfire season we saw in 2025, it is vital that we take those lessons on board to protect our environment and our rural communities.

“In the Highlands, we know all too well the devastating impact these fires can have on our landscapes and the pressure they place on our local fire crews and land managers.

“I am reassured to see a plan that focuses on practical, ongoing improvements to how we prepare for and manage these risks.

“I am committed to working with the Scottish Government and our local partners across the Highlands to ensure our communities have the support and resources they need to stay safe.”

Ms Roddick has previously raised concerns about wildfire risks affecting the Highlands and Islands in parliament.

She has also supported proposals to strengthen local powers to help prevent wildfires through amendments to the Natural Environment Bill.

The legislation has been discussed as part of wider efforts to improve environmental protection and land management across Scotland.

Wildfires can have lasting impacts on ecosystems, wildlife habitats and carbon rich peatland areas that play an important role in tackling climate change.

They can also place significant pressure on rural fire crews and emergency responders who often cover large and remote areas.

The Scottish Government says the new action plan aims to improve coordination between agencies while strengthening prevention and preparedness measures across the country.
