Lidl is reviving the ancient Scottish tradition of Little Christmas by offering a £6 Lidl Plus voucher to 1,000 shoppers across Scotland this January.

The supermarket chain says the vouchers will be available to spend in store from Tuesday the 6th of January 2026, a date which was historically marked as Christmas Day in Scotland and is still observed by some communities today.

Known variously as the Feast of the Epiphany, Little Christmas, or Nollaig Bheag in Gaelic, the 6th of January marked the end of the festive season for centuries before Scotland adopted the Gregorian calendar.

Lidl is marking the tradition with what it calls a Little Lidl Christmas party, giving 1,000 Lidl Plus users in Scotland the chance to receive £6 off their shopping during what is often seen as a bleak month.

To take part, Lidl Plus users simply need to enter their details at the Little Lidl Christmas website, with vouchers sent directly to successful applicants.

The tradition of Little Christmas has ancient Celtic roots and was once marked by customs such as burning a Yule log to encourage prosperity and an early spring.

Other traditions included lighting candles in windows to ward off bad spirits and bringing greenery and embers from the Yule log indoors, a practice often compared to a modern Christmas tree.

The celebration dates back to the time when Scotland followed the Julian calendar, with places such as the Shetland island of Foula still observing Christmas in January to this day.

While modern celebrations in those communities now resemble the 25th of December with gifts and family visits, the date remains an important part of Scotland’s cultural history.

The Little Lidl Christmas website will be live from the 5th of January, with vouchers redeemable in store from Tuesday the 6th of January until Monday the 19th of January 2026.

Lidl has warned that the offer is limited to 1,000 vouchers and will be allocated on a first come basis.
