Ordinary people are being made to pay a heavy price for Tory failures and inaction, the SNP has said as a report revealed how living standards won’t improve for many households for a number of years.
The report, from the National Institute of Economic and Social Research, reveals that for people in income deciles 2-5, living standards won’t return to pre-pandemic levels until the end of 2026.
David Linden, the SNP’s Social Justice spokesperson, said the report was an indictment on Tory rule, and one that should shake the UK government into action.
Commenting, David Linden MP said:
“Ordinary people are being made to pay a heavy price for Tory failure and inaction, with living standards having fallen sharply as a result of Westminster’s cost of living crisis.
“Households need action and proposals from the UK government that will put money back into their pockets – the King’s Speech failed spectacularly to deliver.
“By remaining wedded to damaging policies like Brexit and austerity, both the Tories and Labour party are content to leave ordinary households out of pocket.
“Scotland doesn’t have to put up with the economic mismanagement of Westminster governments we don’t vote for – with the full powers of independence we can escape this failing Westminster system and create an economy that works for everyone.Â
“Independent countries like Scotland are wealthier and fairer than the UK – so the question is, why not Scotland?”Â
