Shetland’s popular Outdoor Clothing Swap Shop returns this weekend, offering families the chance to gear up for winter while helping reduce waste and support others in the community.

Organised by Shetland Islands Council’s Sport and Leisure Service in partnership with RSPB Shetland, the free event will take place on Sunday 16 November at the Gilbertson Park Games Hall in Lerwick from 11am to 2pm.

Last year’s Swap Shop saw around 400 people through the doors, with jackets, waterproofs, boots, hats and scarves finding new homes as Shetlanders prepared for the colder months ahead.

This year’s event promises the same friendly atmosphere and practical purpose, helping people kit themselves out for winter while encouraging reuse, community spirit, and connection to the outdoors.

Donations are still being accepted throughout the week and can be dropped off at the ‘Kit for All’ bins located at Shetland Recreational Trust leisure centres and swimming pools.

All clothing should be clean, wearable, and ready to pass on.

Louise Jamieson, Active Schools Manager with Shetland Islands Council, said the response has already been fantastic.

“We were so happy with the positive feedback on the Outdoor Clothing Swap Shop last year that we simply had to run the event again,” she said.

“Donations have been coming in thick and fast, and we’re looking forward to seeing plenty of folk on Sunday.

“Please come along and take away some clothing for your family so everyone can enjoy the great outdoors, even when the weather isn’t so great.”

Local organisations will also be attending to offer information and advice on outdoor activity, access and wellbeing, while local firm Garriock Brothers Ltd are kindly supporting the event by providing free tea, coffee, fruit and biscuits.

With the cost of living and environmental pressures continuing to affect families, the Swap Shop offers a simple, practical way to make a difference, one jacket, one pair of boots, and one good conversation at a time.
