Outdoor education can make a huge difference in the lives of children and young people across Scotland, according to the SNP’s candidate for Skye, Lochaber and Badenoch, following the passing of new legislation at Holyrood.
The Scottish Parliament this week approved the Schools Residential Outdoor Education Scotland Bill, which will require councils to ensure pupils have access to residential outdoor education trips.
The Bill was introduced by Conservative MSP Liz Smith and passed with broad cross party support.
Eilidh Munro said the vote showed what can be achieved when parties work together in the interests of young people.
“I was pleased to see this Bill pass with overwhelming support, showing the potential for cross party collaboration at Holyrood.
“MSPs with very different views united to do something that will benefit children across Scotland in years to come.”
“Liz Smith should be commended for her efforts, along with the Scottish Government for its robust engagement throughout the Bill’s progress to allow the final version to receive the support required in the chamber.
Munro welcomed provisions in the Bill requiring consultation with teachers and education unions.
“Teachers are vital in ensuring the success of these trips and I’m pleased to see a requirement for consultation with education professionals and unions embedded in this Bill.
“These measures, along with robust data gathering, will make sure that the implementation of this Bill works for everyone.
“I know the huge difference that high quality outdoor education can make to our children and young people.
“It gives them opportunities to push themselves, try new things and discover new, potentially lifelong, hobbies.”
Munro said access to outdoor learning is particularly important in Highland communities.
“We are lucky to have some of the most beautiful landscapes in the world on our doorsteps.
“It is so important that kids can access and explore them, whilst building vital personal and social skills.”
She also highlighted the economic importance of the outdoor education sector in Skye, Lochaber and Badenoch.
“The outdoor education sector is of massive importance to our constituency.”
“If elected as the next MSP for Skye, Lochaber and Badenoch, I will always strive to protect the sector’s jobs and ensure fair funding for the industry.”
The Bill now places a duty on councils to make residential outdoor education more accessible, with the Scottish Government expected to work with local authorities on implementation.
Supporters say the legislation could help ensure that opportunities to benefit from outdoor learning are not limited by geography or family income.
