Police in the Highlands are reissuing an appeal for information one year after Ian Ross was last heard from.

The 66-year-old, a keen and experienced hill walker, was reported missing on Tuesday 17 September 2024, after family members became concerned when they were unable to contact him.

The last known contact with Mr Ross was on Friday 6 September.

His grey Dacia Duster was discovered parked at the foot of Beinn Alligin in Torridon on Wednesday 18 September.

Officers believe the car may have been there since Sunday 8 September.

Extensive searches have been carried out over the past year by police, mountain rescue teams and volunteers, with support from drones and AI technology provided by the Search and Rescue Aerial Association.

Ian is described as white, around 5ft 10ins tall, of medium build, with grey hair and grey-blue eyes.

It is not known what he was wearing when last seen, but as an experienced walker, it is likely he would have been wearing hiking boots, a waterproof jacket and carrying a rucksack.

Inspector Daniel Jack said the search had been detailed and persistent, but a year on, the family still have no answers.

“A year on from when Ian was last heard from, we are appealing to anyone who is yet to speak to police or may have any information that could assist our enquiries to come forward,” he said.

“Extensive searches have been carried out in the past year, including working with our partner organisations to utilise new technology to continue our search in the area Ian was last known to be.

“We have worked alongside Mountain Rescue, the Search and Rescue Aerial Association and members of the community and would like to thank them for their continued support.

“However, despite our efforts, Ian has not been seen since.

“This remains extremely upsetting for Ian’s family, and we would urge anyone who is yet to come forward to speak to us.

“In addition, we’d ask anyone who was in the area surrounding Torridon around Sunday 8 September 2024 to get in touch with us, no matter how small the information may seem.”

Anyone with information is urged to contact Police Scotland on 101, quoting incident number 2381 of Tuesday 17 September 2024.
