Police Scotland has reinforced its travel advice after an Amber warning for snow was extended to include the Shetland Isles from midnight on the 3rd of January until 12pm the same day.

The warning adds to an existing Amber alert for heavy and persistent snow affecting parts of Aberdeenshire, Moray, Angus, northeast Perthshire, Easter Ross and Caithness, which also remains in place until 12pm on the 3rd of January.

Met Office has also extended Yellow warnings for snow and ice across the northeast, widening the area expected to experience disruption.

Police say the combination of snowfall, ice, and changing conditions could lead to hazardous driving, delays, and road closures across several regions.

Officers are urging people to think carefully about whether travel is necessary during the warning periods and to plan journeys in advance where travel cannot be avoided.

Scott McCarren said conditions could deteriorate quickly.

“The forecasted heavy and persistent snow showers and ice mean it is likely for driving conditions to become hazardous in some areas and our advice is to plan ahead and consider if your journey is really necessary during the warning periods.

“If you need to travel, please drive to the conditions, be prepared for delays and allow extra time for your journey.

“Please don’t drive through road closures, the decision to close roads is not taken lightly and is done for public safety.”

Police Scotland said its road policing teams are monitoring conditions closely and working with partner agencies to respond to incidents as they arise.

Motorists are being reminded to check weather forecasts, road reports, and local travel advice before setting out, particularly in rural and exposed areas where conditions can change rapidly.

Public transport disruption is also possible in affected areas, with passengers advised to check with operators before travelling.

The Met Office says further updates will be issued as forecasts develop, with people encouraged to stay informed as the weather system moves through the north of Scotland.

Police Scotland continues to advise caution, patience, and flexibility as winter conditions persist across large parts of the country.
