The SNP’s Westminster leader, Stephen Flynn MP, has written to the Prime Minister calling his net zero u-turn a risk to ‘both our climate obligations and our economic future’.
The Aberdeenshire MP has highlighted that the UK government’s decision to roll back on climate promises will hit hardest in Scotland – where he warns that history is repeating itself.
Whilst urging the Prime Minister to reconsider his net-zero u-turn, the SNP’s Westminster leader ultimately calls for Scotland to have the power to decide its own energy future as an independent country.
Commenting, the SNP’s Westminster leader, Stephen Flynn MP said:
“This reckless plan from the Tories puts at risk Scotland’s economic future – we are a renewable energy powerhouse and there is a global energy race to Net Zero, if the UK takes us out of that race the damage will be catastrophic.
“All the evidence tells us that we can protect and create jobs in Scotland by ensuring that we get the energy transition right, but the Tories now don’t even seem to want to have a transition, just a cliff edge.
“Labour’s decision to row back on their own Net Zero investment plans has opened the door to the Tories weaponising our energy future and they’ve decided to run through it.
“Rishi Sunak and the Tories are displaying a poverty of ambition, not content with having stolen Scotland’s energy past Westminster now wants to sabotage our energy future.”
