Exciting new plans for the latest section of the A9 Dualling programme have been unveiled, with the public now invited to have their say.
Fresh designs for the stretch between Pass of Birnam and Tay Crossing include new grade-separated junctions at Birnam and Dalguise, along with a new roundabout at Dunkeld.
Also in the pipeline is a new car park for Dunkeld and Birnam railway station, plus an underpass beneath the A9 and railway line, creating step free access to both station platforms for locals and visitors alike.
The draft Orders, published this week, mark the start of the statutory consultation period, giving communities and road users a key opportunity to shape the future of this important route.
Public exhibitions will take place at Birnam Arts Centre on 11 and 12 June 2025, with an online exhibition and interactive Story Map now live to help people explore the plans.
Fiona Hyslop, Cabinet Secretary for Transport, welcomed the latest milestone.
She said:
“This is the final section of the dualling programme to reach the draft Order stage, and it has been shaped by a co-creative process with the local community.
“I want to thank everyone involved for their thoughtful contributions, which have broadened our vision for this part of the A9.
“The draft Orders reflect key elements of the community’s preferred route, including the new roundabout at Dunkeld and junction layouts at The Hermitage and Dalguise.
“These plans aim to support long-term and sustainable economic growth for Dunkeld, Birnam and the wider area, while also improving connectivity and accessibility to the railway station for both locals and tourists.”
She added:
“Local communities and road users will soon have the chance to view and comment on these proposals, both in person and online.
“I encourage everyone with an interest to take part and help shape the future of this vital route.
“We remain committed to delivering a safe, reliable and fully dualled A9 between Perth and Inverness by the end of 2035.
“This is a complex and ambitious programme, but one that will deliver real benefits for communities, businesses, visitors and everyone travelling along this corridor.
“Reduced journey times, greater reliability, improved safety and better active travel options are just some of the advantages that lie ahead.”
The A9 Dualling programme continues to move forward, with each section bringing the vision of a transformed Highland transport corridor ever closer.
