The SNP has said the UK government must deliver emergency help to reverse the Tory cost of living crisis at the Queen’s Speech – warning its hands-off approach has been “an abject failure” that is pushing millions of families into hardship and poverty.

With household bills soaring and the UK Parliament about to prorogue, Ian Blackford MP said people in Scotland can “send a message to Boris Johnson and demand action on the cost of living” by voting SNP at the local elections on 5th May.

The SNP Westminster Leader said the Tory government was “failing to lift a finger” to tackle a crisis it has caused through a decade of Tory austerity cuts, Brexit price rises and economic mismanagement.

Commenting, SNP Westminster Leader Ian Blackford MP said:

“The UK government must use the Queen’s Speech to deliver emergency help for families and reverse the Tory cost of living crisis, which is hammering household incomes.

“The Tories have caused this crisis by imposing a decade of damaging austerity cuts, Brexit price rises and economic mismanagement – and now they are failing to lift a finger as families struggle to get by.

“Boris Johnson and Rishi Sunak’s hands-off approach to this crisis has been an abject failure, which is pushing millions of families into hardship and poverty.

“Families need meaningful help now.

“The UK government must scrap its National Insurance tax hike, reverse Tory cuts to Universal Credit, introduce a Real Living Wage, and raise pensions and benefits instead of imposing real-terms cuts.

“People in Scotland can send a message to Boris Johnson – and demand action on the cost of living – by voting SNP at the local elections on 5th May.”
