Questions for Sunak Over Family’s Tax Bills

Commenting on the revelation that Chancellor Rishi Sunak’s wife Akshata Murty has non-dom status, meaning she does not have to pay UK tax on income earned abroad, SNP Depute Westminster Leader, Kirsten Oswald MP, said:

“People will be appalled at the revelation that the UK’s millionaire Chancellor and his family are benefitting from non-dom status, allowing them to save on their tax bill while hiking it for the rest of us.

“While non-dom status may be legal, there are a whole host of questions the Chancellor must now answer, including exactly how much he and his family have benefitted in cash terms from this loophole, as well as making clear in which jurisdiction tax is being paid on this income, and if they are using tax havens.

“Rishi Sunak – and the rest of this Tory government – are so far removed from what ordinary families are facing during this cost of living crisis.

“They either don’t even know where to begin to support people because they’re so out-of-touch, despite the wealth of expert advice, or they simply don’t care.

“Whatever the case may be, it is crystal clear that ordinary families in Scotland will never be protected and supported by the Tories.”
