Red Pandas Return to Highland Wildlife Park

Highland Wildlife Park has welcomed a three year old red panda named Priya to its site near Kingussie on Tuesday 31st of March, marking the return of the species in time for the Easter holidays.

The arrival brings red pandas back to the park for the first time since 2022, when previous residents Kevyn and Kitty were moved to Edinburgh Zoo during the construction of Scotland’s Wildlife Discovery Centre.

Priya has arrived from Edinburgh Zoo and is already settling into a newly built habitat designed around the needs of the species.

Set on a wooded hillside with views across the Cairngorms, the habitat includes tall trees and climbing structures that allow her to explore, rest and move naturally.

The space has been carefully created by the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland, the conservation charity that operates both Highland Wildlife Park and Edinburgh Zoo.

Michael Livingstone, carnivore team leader at Highland Wildlife Park, said:

“It’s always exciting to welcome a new animal, but even more so when they are as sweet and well-mannered as little Priya.

“I’m excited to see our visitors fall in love with her.

“I used to look after Priya at Edinburgh Zoo, so I know her well.

“It’s wonderful to be reunited and to see her enjoying a new home.

“The habitat is beautiful, with lots of trees, areas to explore and plenty of space for her to do as she pleases.

“She’s going to be really happy here.”

The park has confirmed that a male red panda will arrive in the near future as part of wider conservation efforts.

Staff hope the pair will contribute to a successful breeding programme for the endangered species.

Plans are also in place to introduce red panda feeding experiences, giving visitors a closer look at one of the world’s most loved animals.

Visitors keen to catch a glimpse of Priya can book tickets in advance, with early demand expected over the Easter period.

The return of red pandas adds another strong draw to Highland Wildlife Park as it continues to develop its offering for both conservation and visitor experience.
