Police are appealing for witnesses after a roadworker was assaulted while clearing trees on the A82 following Storm Amy.

The incident happened around midday on Saturday 4 October, in the Glen Gloy area, roughly a mile and a half north of Spean Bridge.

The man had been operating a chainsaw to remove fallen trees and debris from the road when a motorist approached and physically assaulted him, pushing him into a ditch.

The suspect then drove off in a grey Renault van, believed to be a left-hand drive Trafic model, bearing a foreign registration with the numbers 7532.

Police say the vehicle had a European number plate and that the driver is believed to have spoken with a French or Italian accent.

He is described as white, aged between 45 and 55, around 5ft 9in tall, of medium build, with grey facial hair.

He was wearing a blue beanie hat, a black Rab waterproof jacket, and blue jeans.

The roadworker did not suffer serious injuries but was left shaken by the assault, which happened as he worked to help clear storm damage and reopen the route for drivers.

Inspector Katy Duncan of Fort William Police said the attack was not only unacceptable, but could have ended in tragedy.

“Fortunately the victim was not seriously injured, however, the fact he was attacked whilst operating a chainsaw is outrageous and so dangerous,” she said.

“The worker was doing his job in challenging weather conditions to ensure the road network was re-opened, and it is completely unacceptable that he was subjected to this behaviour.”

Police are asking anyone who was travelling on the A82 near Glen Gloy around the time of the incident to review dashcam footage or recall any sightings of the grey van.

Officers are particularly keen to speak with anyone who may have seen the suspect vehicle before or after the incident, or who may have passed the scene around midday.

Information can be passed to Police Scotland by calling 101 and quoting incident number 1541 of Saturday, 4 October 2025.

Alternatively, details can be shared anonymously through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or via the ‘Contact Us’ section on the Police Scotland website.
