Visitors to Fort George are about to step through two thousand years of history in one extraordinary weekend.

Scotland’s largest historical re‑enactment event, Celebration of the Centuries, returns on Saturday 9 and Sunday 10 August and promises one of its most thrilling line‑ups yet.

At the heart of the spectacle, Robert the Bruce will ride into the jousting arena, facing none other than Sir James Douglas, the Black Douglas in a display of medieval pageantry few will ever forget.

For two days, the mighty fortress on the Moray Firth will become a living, breathing timeline of Scotland’s past.

From Pictish warriors to Roman legions, medieval knights to early modern weavers, every corner of the site will hum with activity and storytelling.

Families can wander through living history camps, talk with costumed interpreters and watch as centuries unfold before their eyes.

Gillian Urquhart, Events Manager at Historic Environment Scotland, says this is one of the most magical weekends of the year.

“Celebration of the Centuries at Fort George is one of our most popular summer events,” she says.

“It gives people of all ages the chance to engage with history in a way that feels alive and unforgettable.

“From warriors and weavers to nobles and knights, it is a true celebration of Scotland across the ages.”

The event runs from 11am to 5pm both days, with every joust, battle and craft demonstration included in the price of entry.

Fort George is also part of Historic Environment Scotland’s Historic Places, Breathing Spaces campaign, which explores how heritage sites can lift wellbeing.

Monument manager John Gibbon has created a walking guide to highlight the fort’s peaceful spots, perfect for quiet moments between the clash of shields and the roar of the crowd.

The guide can be found online at hes.scot/wellbeing and in person at the event itself.

Entry is free for Historic Scotland members, who can also collect History Hunt Cards at staffed sites.

A full set of cards can be exchanged for an exclusive pin badge, adding a touch of treasure hunting to an already magical day out.

More information and tickets are available through the Historic Environment Scotland website
