Roses are Red, Violets are Blue, We’d be Better Off Back in The EU

The SNP has called out the UK Tory government for their Brexit obsession and inaction on rising costs as people face soaring prices and shortages this Valentine’s Day.

The cost of traditional Valentine’s Day gifts, such as chocolates, flowers and jewellery, have skyrocketed since the UK left the European Union, single market and the customs union as a result of increased Brexit red tape.

Businesses have also voiced concern over a shortage of flowers.

Recent reports revealed that Brexit red tape is costing almost £100 billion in annual UK exports and that there was 30% less trade between 2020 and 2023 than if the UK had stayed in the trading bloc.

For those looking to celebrate Valentine’s day by sharing a meal in a restaurant, the increased cost of their meal will be a direct result of Brexit red tape when it comes to importing ingredients and also hiring staff.

Restaurateurs have also lambasted the impacts of Brexit red tape on their businesses, with a 48% rise in vacancies being reported in the sector due to the difficulties of obtaining a work visa.

Commenting, the SNP’s International Trade Spokesperson, Richard Thomson MP said:

“This Valentine’s day there will be no love lost for the Tory government in this broken, Brexit Britain, as countless Scots are hammered by rising inflation and the Westminster made cost of living crisis.

“Those looking to buy their loved ones a traditional Valentine’s Day gift, or even cook them a simple meal, face soaring costs.

“Through no fault of their own, families in Scotland are paying a heavy price for Westminster’s economic incompetence and Brexit, which is now also championed by Sir Keir Starmer’s Labour Party.

“The Scottish Government is doing everything in its power to protect people from the cost of living crisis and cruel Westminster cuts, such as implementing the Scottish child payment and the council tax freeze – however there is only so much that can be done whilst the majority of welfare spending is tied to Westminster.

“The Tory government’s economic incompetence and Brexit obsession has damaged Scotland – voting SNP in the next general election is the only way to make Scotland Tory-free and ensure a strong team of SNP MPs are making Scotland’s voice and values heard at Westminster.”
