Rural businesses across the Highlands are being invited to explore how artificial intelligence can support growth in practical and affordable ways as the Rural AI Roadshow gets underway in Inverness.

The first of three one day events takes place at Eden Court, bringing together rural business owners, innovators, and practitioners to look at how AI can be used in everyday operations.

The Rural AI Roadshow is being delivered by Scotland’s enterprise agencies in partnership with The Scottish AI Allianceand The Data Lab, with a clear focus on the needs of rural enterprises.

In the Highlands and Islands, the programme is led by Highlands and Islands Enterprise, reflecting the growing importance of digital tools for businesses operating at distance and scale.

The Inverness event is followed by further roadshow dates in Dundee and Gretna, creating a short national tour aimed at strengthening rural economies through accessible innovation.

Organisers say the events are designed to show that AI is not just for large technology firms, but is already being used by small and rural businesses to improve customer service, manage stock, reduce waste, and better predict demand.

Crucially, the focus is on tools that are simple to use, low cost, and relevant to real business challenges, rather than complex systems that require large investment or specialist teams.

Each conference will feature real world examples from rural businesses, demonstrations of practical AI tools, and opportunities for discussion across the public and private sectors.

The aim is to inform and inspire while also addressing common concerns around technology, skills, and trust, allowing businesses to leave with ideas they can apply straight away.

Senior development manager at Highlands and Islands Enterprise, Theresa Swayne, said the roadshow is about turning opportunity into action.

“The Rural AI Roadshow will showcase opportunities for Scottish businesses, highlight pioneering projects, and provide practical insights into how AI can support inclusive and sustainable growth in rural Scotland.

“Attendees will hear directly from fellow rural entrepreneurs, take part in hands on sessions, and leave with clear, actionable ideas for their own businesses.”

The roadshow is open to rural businesses of all sizes and sectors, with organisers keen to create straightforward and honest conversations about how AI can save time, support decision making, and help businesses thrive.

For many rural firms, the event offers a chance to cut through the noise around artificial intelligence and see how it can work in practice, on their terms, and at their pace.
