The SNP has hit out at Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar after he refused to commit his party to a rethink on the callous Winter Fuel Payment cut – refusing even to lobby the Labour Chancellor on the matter.
The Daily Record revealed that Sarwar has refused to back a U-turn on the decision to cut – on the very week Ofgem announced the energy price cap would soar.
The UK Labour government’s inaction was branded a clear break of the party’s core election promise to bring bills down.
Audrey Nicoll MSP said:
“The UK government’s callous decision to cut the Winter Fuel Payment is a blatant continuation of Tory austerity from a government with the powers to choose a different path.
“Anas Sarwar’s silence on the matter is a rubber stamp from Scottish Labour for more Westminster austerity, which will hit Scotland’s most vulnerable hard.
“Scottish Labour proves time and again it is incapable of standing up for Scotland.
“Only the SNP can be trusted to put Scotland’s interests first – and it’s only with the full powers of independence that Scotland can escape Westminster austerity for good.”
