Scotland Snatch Dramatic Victory Over Ireland as Shinty Season Nears its Conclusion

Scotland secured a dramatic 24–23 victory over Ireland in the Mowi Shinty/Hurling International on Saturday 24 October, providing a memorable highlight as the 2026 shinty season approaches its conclusion.

The narrow victory in Cork gave Scotland their first success over Ireland in the international fixture since 2019, with Kingussie’s Zander Michie converting a decisive late penalty point.

Ireland had drawn level at 23–23 before the closing stages produced a dramatic finish, leaving Michie with the opportunity to secure victory for Scotland.

It was a fitting conclusion to a fiercely contested international which saw both sides enjoy periods of control before Scotland eventually edged home by the narrowest possible margin.

The women’s Mowi Shinty/Camogie International also took place in Ireland, although Scotland faced a much more difficult afternoon against a powerful home side.

Ireland recorded a 38–6 victory, with Scotland’s Megan Ralph among the scorers alongside Iona McCulloch and Lorna MacRae.

While the result was disappointing for Scotland, the international provided another opportunity for the women’s game to compete on a major representative stage.

Back in domestic shinty, the remaining league fixtures continued to shape the closing stages of the season, although weather conditions again caused disruption.

Newtonmore recorded a convincing 6–1 victory over Fort William in Mowi North Division 1.

Glen Mackintosh opened the scoring from the penalty spot after seven minutes before Fraser Mackintosh doubled Newtonmore’s advantage in the 15th minute.

Glen Mackintosh added his second in the 26th minute, although Fort William responded through Dan Nixon eight minutes later.

Newtonmore restored their authority in the second half as Donald Ross scored in the 46th minute, Logan McCormack added another in the 62nd and Jacob Bain completed the scoring in the 89th minute.

The victory marked an important conclusion to Newtonmore’s league campaign, with the club celebrating North Division 1 success.

In Mowi South Division 1, Lochside Rovers recorded a commanding 6–0 victory over Glasgow Mid Argyll.

The result secured the South Division 1 title for Lochside Rovers, providing another reason for celebration as the domestic season winds down.

There was also league success for Lochaber in North Division 2, although their scheduled meeting with Lochcarron did not take place.

Lochcarron were unable to field a team, resulting in the points being awarded to Lochaber.

Elsewhere, the weather continued to affect the remaining fixtures.

Skye’s Premiership meeting with Kyles Athletic was postponed because of an unplayable field, while Kinlochshiel’s North Division 1 fixture against Kingussie was called off following a weather warning.

With the major cup competitions already completed and the remaining league fixtures drawing to a close, attention is increasingly turning towards the final outcomes of the domestic season.

Scotland’s dramatic international success provided a fitting highlight to the weekend, while Newtonmore, Lochside Rovers and Lochaber had their own reasons to celebrate as another shinty season moves towards its conclusion.
