At the SNP’s 2020 Party Conference, members have backed a motion that affirms the democratic right of people in Scotland to decide our own future – and that that decision lies solely with the people of Scotland.
The resolution passed by party delegates sets out that there has been a material change in circumstances since 2014 – including the threat to Scotland’s place in Europe and the contempt with which the UK government has treated the Scottish Parliament.
In the middle of an economic crisis, looming threat of Brexit, and power grab threat posed to the Scottish Parliament through the Internal Market Bill, SNP members made clear that only with independence will Scotland be in a position to rebuild our economy and society, and bring to an end the days of Scotland being ignored by Westminster governments we do not vote for and which cannot be trusted to act in our interests.
Commenting, Scottish Cabinet Secretary for the Constitution, Europe and External Affairs Michael Russell (pictured) said:
“Scotland’s democratic right to choose its own future is a decision that lies solely with the people of Scotland – not out-of-touch Westminster governments that we don’t vote for.
“I am delighted that conference has backed this resolution that affirms Scotland’s right to choose, recognises the clear change in circumstances since 2014, recognises the threat facing Scotland with an extreme Tory Brexit – and importantly – makes clear beyond any doubt that the best people to rebuild a better Scotland are the people who live here.
“We are in the middle of a devastating global pandemic that has hit our economy, and cost jobs and livelihoods.
“In just a matter of weeks’, Scotland faces an extreme Brexit with either a low deal or no deal outcome, and the growing power grab threat posed by the UK Internal Market Bill.
“Scotland’s voice and vote has been completely disregarded by Boris Johnson’s Tory government – which Scotland did not vote for.
“The Tory government’s disdain for devolution and side-lining of Scotland has made clear beyond any doubt that the only way to properly protect our interests and NHS, get the governments we vote for, and build a fairer and progressive society is by becoming an independent country.”
