A Scottish delegation led by Energy Secretary Gillian Martin will travel to Japan to promote the country’s offshore wind expertise and deepen international collaboration in renewables.
The mission will highlight Scotland’s world-leading renewable capabilities at the Wind Expo 2025 in Tokyo, followed by a showcase event at the UK Pavilion during the final Scotland Day of Expo 2025 in Osaka.
Organised by the Scottish Government and Scottish Enterprise, the trade mission is designed to strengthen ties with Japanese industry and government, while opening doors for technical partnerships, investment, and joint research in green energy.
“Growing Scotland’s offshore wind sector presents enormous economic opportunities,” said Energy Secretary Gillian Martin.
She added:
“This trade mission is an opportunity to demonstrate our strengths to new audiences and deepen our relationships with Japanese innovators and investors in renewable energy.”
Scotland has one of the largest offshore wind pipelines in the world, with more than 40 GW of potential capacity, over half of which is floating wind technology.
That’s enough to power around 45 million homes annually.
The visit is part of the Scottish Government’s Green Industrial Strategy, which aims to attract inward investment, build international partnerships, and accelerate the shift to a net zero economy.
The Energy Secretary also highlighted existing Scotland–Japan collaborations such as Balmoral Comtec and Cosmos, who are working together on offshore wind and green hydrogen technologies.
“The transition to net zero provides opportunities for both countries to build new supply chains and establish new ways of working,” said Martin.
“Strengthening international partnerships supports economic growth, attracts investment and jobs, and helps tackle the biggest challenges facing renewables across the world.”
