Council to undertake a second consultation on Nairn Common Good land in respect of proposals to dispose, by sale and/or demolition, of Grant Street workshop and yard.
The Highland Council has on 18 January 2023, launched a second Common Good consultation giving the Nairn community until 17 March 2023 to respond to a proposal to dispose, by sale, of Grant Street workshop and yard, Grant Street, Nairn which is located on Common Good land.
The workshop and yard has been vacant for a significant period of time and is in a dilapidated and overgrown state.
In 2022 the Council consulted on a proposal to dispose of the property at Grant Street by sale.
Members considered representations received from the community and decided to amend the consultation to allow for a disposal by lease only.
Following an initial marketing period it became apparent that the condition of the buildings on site posed major risks to health and safety and the property could not be leased in it’s present condition.
As a result it is again being proposed that disposing by sale would be the most beneficial option for Nairn Common Good fund.
To ensure that the maximum opportunities remain open to Nairn Common Good in respect of this consultation, the proposal also includes disposal by demolition if so indicated by the marketing process.
The only viable situation being considered being a request for a long development lease with demolition undertaken by the tenant.
Given the size of the site, such a request is unlikely but the option to consider should remain available.
The Council is keen to hear the community’s views on the proposal and all submissions will be given full regard before a decision on whether, and how, to proceed is made.
