Shetland will mark Safer Internet Day 2026 tomorrow with a strong focus on helping young people use artificial intelligence safely, responsibly and with confidence.

The day is being supported locally by the Shetland Public Protection Committee and centres on this year’s theme, Smart tech, safe choices – Exploring the safe and responsible use of AI.

The theme reflects the growing presence of AI in the online lives of children and young people and the need for families and communities to support them in making informed and safe choices.

Parents and carers are being encouraged to help young people build the skills and confidence needed to use smart technology thoughtfully and responsibly.

Throughout the year, the committee delivers a range of activity including internet safety sessions, youth conferences in Shetland schools and Child Exploitation and Online Protection training.

For Safer Internet Day 2026, the committee has also developed a new AI debating tool which has been shared with local primary schools to encourage discussion around the benefits and risks of AI.

The initiative is designed to help young people think critically about how AI is used and how it can affect learning, creativity and online behaviour.

Lindsay Tulloch, Chair of the Shetland Public Protection Committee, said:

“This Safer Internet Day 2026, we encourage young people and communities to use the internet and Ai safely, responsibly, and with respect for others.

“Digital spaces should be places where everyone feels confident to learn, create, and connect without fear of harm.

“Staying safe online and using Ai responsibly are important skills for young people and communities today.

“The internet and new technologies can be powerful tools for learning, creativity, and connection but only when they are used thoughtfully and with care.

“We encourage everyone to protect their privacy, think critically about what they see and share online, and use Ai in ways that are fair, respectful, and honest.

“By supporting each other, building digital skills, and speaking up about harmful behaviour, communities can help create online spaces that are safe, inclusive, and empowering for all.”

Educational resources for Safer Internet Day 2026 are available through the UK Safer Internet Centre for parents, carers, young people and professionals working with children and young people.
