A young, queer man leaves his small hometown to take refuge in the bright lights and warm embrace of the big city.
He finds community and joy in a thriving LGBTQ+ nightlife scene, but soon finds himself navigating a terrifying unfolding health crisis, almost completely ignored by the government.
After a sell-out show in 2023 in Dundee, dance company Shaper/Caper brings Small Town Boys to Inverness, a highly acclaimed dance show about the 80s LGBT Club Scene, to kick off their Scotland tour!
Shaper/Caper presents ‘Small Town Boys’ – a show exploring the escapism of queer nightlife during the 80s & early 90s AIDS crisis, through dance and spoken word.
The cast of dancers will be performing at The Botanic House (19-21 September) after a sell-out show last August in Dundee, bringing this pivotal period in LGBTQ+ history to life in all its joys and tragedies.
They will also be joined by Community Cast – a group of LGBTQ+ volunteers and allies, ranging from experienced dancers to complete newbies taking a chance on dance, to bridge the gap between audience and performance.
Small Town Boys was also delighted to be recognised by The Proud Scotland Awards this year, earning the 2024 Creative Award in recognition of the creative presentation of portraying the message of diversity and inclusion within the LGBTQI+ community.
Directed by multi-award-winning choreographer Thomas Small, ‘Small Town Boys’ will include a soundtrack of 80s and early 90s hits, as well as original music by Mark Franks of platinum-selling band the Overtones, set and costume design by Becky Minto and associate designer Fraser Lappin, and lighting design by Dylan Baillie.
Each performance will be followed by a Q&A led by sexual health charity Terrence Higgins Trust, vitally expanding the audience’s knowledge of HIV/AIDS, both throughout history and today.
Whether reliving their own memories of the dance floor, or making some new ones, audiences will have the chance to come up and boogie alongside our cast (or just take a backseat and watch, if they’d prefer!).
Showing at The Botanic House Thursday 19th – Saturday 21st September.
Performances will take place 8:00PM-9:45PM.
This show is 18+.
Tickets are priced £10/£5/£15
