A record number of hip and knee replacement operations were carried out across Scotland last year, new figures confirm.

The Scottish Arthroplasty Project has revealed that 17,399 primary hip or knee replacements were performed in 2024, almost 2,000 more than in 2019.

It marks a significant milestone for the NHS in Scotland as planned operations have risen by 7.7% on the previous year, helping more people get the life‑changing treatment they need.

The report also shows that hospital stays for hip and knee patients have been cut dramatically over the last decade from five days on average to just 2.6 days, allowing people to recover at home sooner.

First Minister John Swinney’s government has pledged record investment in the health service, with more than 300,000 appointments and procedures expected this year.

Clare Haughey MSP said the figures were proof that Scotland’s priorities were being delivered.

“Under John Swinney’s leadership, the SNP is bringing down waiting lists and making it easier for people across Scotland to get the treatment they need,” she said.

“Through record investment in our NHS, the SNP Government is supporting recovery after the worst effects of Brexit and Covid.

“While the Labour government in Westminster is increasing private sector involvement in the NHS, the SNP is committed to keeping it free at the point of use and putting Scotland’s priorities first.”

“This is what you get with the SNP, decisions made in Scotland, for Scotland and today we can see the results.”
