The SNP has called on the UK Government to update the House of Commons on Monday about the fast developing conflict involving Iran, Israel and the United States.

Foreign Affairs spokesperson Stephen Gethins MP confirmed he will table an Urgent Question, pressing ministers to explain the legal basis, strategy and diplomatic path forward.

The request follows US and Israeli strikes on Iran and retaliatory attacks across the region, raising fears of a wider conflict.

Gethins said Parliament must be fully informed at a moment of heightened risk.

He said:

“We are now entering a period of profound uncertainty in the region, and a moment of danger for Iranians and their neighbours.

“Those of us who believe in the international rules-based system will understandably be concerned about the legal basis and exit strategy for this latest military action.

“None of us should be under any illusions about the nature of Iran’s government.

“It is a despicable regime that terrorises and murders its own citizens and threatens its neighbours.

“Iran has also been one of Russia’s main allies in its war of aggression in Ukraine providing many of the drones and missiles used to kill civilians in their homes.

“That is why Iran must not be allowed to develop a nuclear weapon.

“We know the consequences of failing to plan longer term and the consequences for local populations who pay a heavy price as we saw in Iraq, Libya and elsewhere.

“Protection for innocent civilians and international humanitarian law must be a priority going forward.

“The breakdown of international rules is a threat to everyone and undermines our security.

“This is obviously an unfolding situation, and I will be putting down an Urgent Question as a means of ensuring that the Government updates Parliament tomorrow.”

The SNP says the Government must outline how it intends to support de escalation and pursue a diplomatic solution.

With tensions rising across the Middle East, pressure is building for clarity on Britain’s position and next steps.
