The Scottish National Party (SNP) have selected a local teacher to contest the Ward 7 Tain and Easter Ross Highland Council by-election going to the polls on September 25th.
Peter Newman, 43, a teacher at Dornoch Academy, will be the SNP candidate in the by-election triggered by popular local SNP councillor Derek Loudon’s resignation due to ill health.
A former rugby player for Ross Sutherland, Newman is also on the board of the St Duthac Books and Arts Festival.
Newman said:
“It’s an absolute honour to be selected to represent the SNP at this crucial by-election.
“Derek Loudon has been a huge figure both in Tain and across Highland and I look forward to trying to and extending his legacy.
“Of course the dominant issue at the moment is ensuring that we save the TRACC swimming pool and I believe that this community has the determination and desire to make sure that not only do we do so, but that we find a solution even better than the current arrangements.
“During the campaign, the running aspect is going to be a little difficult because I am also currently recovering from a full hip replacement which was performed at the wonderful National Treatment Centre in Inverness.
“However, this means I want to highlight throughout election, the strength of our NHS, the respect I have for our superb NHS workers and the gratitude I have for how well I’ve been looked after.”
