SNP Westminster Leader Calls for Daily Updates on Afghan Evacuation Efforts

The SNP has urged Boris Johnson to deliver daily updates on the UK governments evacuation efforts in Afghanistan.

SNP Westminster Leader, Ian Blackford MP (pictured), has written to the Prime Minister demanding daily updates on the evacuation – describing the proposal as a “fundamental priority”.

The call comes as SNP MPs prepare to meet members of the Glasgow Afghan Community (GAC) to discuss the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan, and to hear from those who still have family in the country.

Mr Blackford has said it is vital that the UK plays it part in the resettlement process, with numbers matching those resettled under the Syrian Resettlement Scheme.

The SNP Westminster Leader has also said the crisis demonstrated the need for the UK Tory government to scrap its “anti-refugee” Nationality and Borders Bill, as well as reversing cuts to international aid.

Commenting, SNP Westminster Leader Ian Blackford MP said:

“As the humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan continues to unfold, complete clarity and transparency is required.

“Those facing the agonising wait for evacuation are desperate for information, desperate for clarity and are desperately trying to get away from the Taliban.

“That is why I have written to Boris Johnson urging him to deliver daily updates on the evacuation efforts, and to offer a platform for leaders of the opposition and the media to ask necessary and appropriate questions.

“Every MP across the House is currently speaking with constituents who are deeply concerned about the safety and well-being of family members in Afghanistan – daily updates on their safety and plans for their evacuation would provide them with the detail and assurance they are crying out for.

“As well as updating the public daily, the Prime Minster must also commit to increasing the number of Afghan refugees allowed into the UK under the new Afghan Resettlement Scheme to at least 35,000.

“In addition, the Prime Minister must reverse his cruel anti-refugee Nationality and Borders Bill, and U-turn on the devastating international aid cuts implemented earlier this year.

“Failure to do so will conclude that the Tories have no intention of helping the world’s most vulnerable.”
