Keir Starmer has abandoned Scotland by claiming a return to freedom of movement is a ‘red line’ and that it won’t come back under a Labour government.

Speaking to the Mail on Sunday Starmer ruled out re-joining the single market, customs union or bringing back freedom of movement.

Commenting, SNP Westminster Leader Ian Blackford MP said:

“Keir Starmer has perfectly demonstrated why pro-Brexit Labour has abandoned Scotland and will provide no real alternative to the Tories if he gets the keys to Number 10.

“Brexit has been an unmitigated disaster for Scotland and its world-class industries, costing us millions.

“However, despite the economic calamity that it has been, there is no route back to the EU for Scotland under a Labour government.

“Not only has Keir Starmer ruled out bringing back freedom of movement, but he has also ruled out re-joining the single market or the customs union – the ending of all of these have been deeply damaging to Scotland, to keep us out is tone deaf to the needs of the Scottish economy.

“Businesses across Scotland have told how Brexit has supercharged problems they are facing recruiting staff.

“All a Labour government would do is continue to hold back Scotland compared to our European neighbours who are thriving as a part of the EU, a market seven times the size of the UK.

“There is no way back to the European Union for Scotland under a Labour government.

“That is why Scotland must become an independent country and re-join the European Union to be able to realise its full potential.”
