That first match saw MacLachlan referee Inverness against Caberfeidh Seconds on the outside pitch at the Bught.

He has since risen through the refereeing ranks to become one of shinty’s leading officials.

His experience includes taking charge of both the MacTavish Cup Final and Celtic Society Cup Final, having earlier officiated the Strathdearn Cup Final.

The appointment now gives the Ballachulish official the opportunity to referee Kingussie and Newtonmore as the two Badenoch rivals compete for shinty’s greatest prize.

Camanachd Association Officials Director John MacRitchie said:

“Steven’s appointment is thoroughly deserved and reflects the commitment and consistency he has shown since taking up refereeing in 2017.

“He has developed into a highly respected official and has demonstrated his ability on major occasions, including the MacTavish Cup and Celtic Society Cup Finals.

“A Camanachd Cup Final is the highest honour for a referee in our domestic game, and we are confident Steven will handle the occasion with professionalism, fairness and composure.”

For MacLachlan, the appointment carries particular significance because of his Ballachulish roots and the other referees from the village who have received the same honour.

MacLachlan said:

“I’m absolutely delighted to have been appointed to referee the Tulloch Homes Camanachd Cup Final. It is a huge honour and something you work towards throughout your refereeing career.

“I’m particularly proud to be another referee from Ballachulish to receive the honour.

“I’ve had a lot of support from a lot of people along the way, and only because of a lot of people am I still here to be able to get this accolade.

“To be trusted with the biggest game in the domestic shinty calendar means a great deal, and I’m really looking forward to the occasion.”

The 2026 final brings together Kingussie and Newtonmore at Mossfield Park, with tickets already on sale ahead of the 19 September showdown.
