Davy McCracken of SRUC will open the event with a presentation examining how trees can contribute to farm resilience, productivity and sustainability.

Farmers will then have an opportunity to discuss how woodland could fit within their own businesses and future plans.

The afternoon will move from discussion to practical experience with a visit to the Lockett family’s 250 hectare Knockbain Farm.

The award winning mixed farm has developed wetlands, hedgerows, ponds and growing areas of native and productive woodland alongside its pedigree Luing cattle enterprise.

Richard Lockett will take visitors through the family’s experience of creating woodland and explain what they have learned along the way.

The tour will also look at how trees are contributing to livestock welfare, biodiversity, timber production and the wider resilience of the farm.

Lockett said:

“Woodlands are now an important part of our farming business. We’re looking forward to sharing both the successes and the lessons we’ve learned with others who may be considering the first steps on their own woodland creation journey.”

A representative from Scottish Forestry will also attend to answer questions about funding available for woodland creation.

Practical guidance will be available for farmers and land managers considering taking their first steps towards introducing more trees to their land.

The event comes as agricultural businesses consider how their land can remain productive while adapting to changing economic and environmental pressures.

Rather than looking at woodland as something separate from agriculture, the Strathpeffer event will focus on how trees can become part of the working farm itself.

The programme runs from 10am until 3pm and is free to attend, although places must be booked in advance.
